#MissionMonday Spot: Haven Youth, local families, and the spririt of Thanksgiving

#MissionMonday today highlights the youth of Haven Fellowship. Annually, the youth sponsor a golf tournament, Birdies for Baskets, in the spring to raise funds for Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets. This year, the youth were able to collect and sponsor 10 families. TEN families in our community were blessed with household items, food, school supplies and items for a Thanksgiving meal!

Check out this video of this year’s preparations and narration by one of our amazing youth leaders!

As many of us enjoyed an excess of food, family, and fellowship, little thought was given “the less fortunate”. Perhaps we thought about and prayed for them, but little thought was given to our neighbor a few houses up that recently fell on hard times. Little thought may have been given to a neighbor a few streets away that recently lost their job, or suffered a health crisis. Maybe we sometimes forget that that the smallest act of kindness is a great act of love and opens one’s heart to Christ.

We are proud of the our youth for their compassion for our neighbors in our community. These 10 families were blessed and thrilled to be given a basket full of essential items for the holidays and the dignity to have the means to prepare a Thanksgiving meal.

We are thankful for our community that supported the Birdies for Basket fund raiser, our body for sponsorship and donations, and to our youth leaders & parents for leading by example.

We will continue to collect non-perishable food items, household items (cleaning supplies, paper towels etc), and school supplies for our Christmas baskets! The youth are most excited as they will also go shopping for gifts for each children and deliver them with the baskets this year! Financial donations can be made out to Haven Fellowship and noted “Youth Baskets” for a tax deductible contribution. Consider giving this year knowing that all proceeds benefit local families. The mission team challenges you to help the youth double the number of families that they can serve at Christmas.

Many of us may think of far off and distant, impoverished, war-torn lands when we hear “mission” or “mission field”. Our mission field is our own zip code. It is our neighbors, surrounding streets, fellow citizens we see on the highway and the grocery store, or PTA meetings. Our neighbors are our mission and Jesus was very clear in His instructions; “The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:31

Haven is proud to embody and be led by our motto verse: “34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

As you continue through this holiday season and look towards your goals or resolutions for next year, ask yourself “How does God want me to love my neighbors and serve in my local mission field?”

We would be thrilled for you to join us at church and meet you! Bring the kids on Wednesdays at 6:45p for children, youth, and adult fellowship, or Sunday mornings at 10am with Sunday school for all ages at 9am. Check out our calendar for more activities!
